What State Has The Most Motorcycle Accidents?
To find out the state with the most motorcycle accidents, we looked at the number of deaths per thousand motorcycles registered. Then, we compared those numbers to the number of motorcycle fatalities reported to NHTSA. Using the average we derived, we were able to rank each state from most risky to least risky.

Texas
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Texas has the highest rate of fatal motorcycle crashes in the nation. These accidents typically involve speeding, and 32 percent of crashes involve a passenger vehicle. More than half of these crashes happen during the night, and about 30 percent of them are fatal. Motorcycle accidents are also more likely to occur in rural areas. Texas’ rural locations are also more likely to have motorcycle accidents.
While these accidents are often the fault of both parties, a large portion of them results in fatalities. Most of these accidents occur in intersections, where drivers often fail to yield the right of way. In addition, traffic congestion makes it difficult to see motorcycles. Another leading cause of motorcycle accidents is failure to yield the right of way. Nearly one-third of motorcycle accidents in Texas took place at intersections.
Florida
Florida has the highest percentage of motorcycle accidents in the nation, but not all of them are deadly. Miami-Dade County leads the way with 11% of motorcycle crashes and the state’s highest number of deaths. Broward County, which includes the most motorcycle deaths, has a slightly lower percentage than the other counties listed. And while Volusia County may not have as many residents, it still has a higher rate than other counties.
A study by the Center for Urban Transportation Research looked at Florida motorcycle accidents in 2009. It found that the majority of fatal motorcycle crashes occurred between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays, and a third of non-incapacitating crashes occurred between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on weekends. During this time, most drivers are not working, which means that the roads are more crowded and the risk of a fatal crash increase.
California

Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania has some of the nation’s highest rates of motorcycle accidents. Last year, more than 3,200 motorcyclists were injured in collisions and 217 people were killed. Because of their low mass and inability to see oncoming traffic, motorcycles pose a higher risk of collisions than other vehicles. In addition, they offer very little protection against collisions and lack other safety features. Therefore, Pennsylvanians are encouraged to pay close attention to motorcycle riders when driving on the road.
In 2010, Pennsylvania had the highest number of motorcycle accidents in the country. In 2010, there were 3,930 motorcycle accidents, resulting in the death of 223 people. Of these, 202 of the fatalities were motorcycle drivers, and 21 were passengers. Of these deaths, 23 percent were caused by alcohol. While motorcycle crashes in Pennsylvania are more frequent, other states are experiencing lower numbers.
Ohio
Motorcycle accidents in Ohio are extremely common, according to a report released by the state highway patrol. In 2017, over 303,000 motorcycle accidents were reported, with almost ten thousand injuries and nearly one hundred twenty deaths. Motorcycle crashes make up four of every 10 traffic accidents, and they are particularly deadly for motorcyclists. Nearly half of the victims were not wearing protective gear, including a helmet. More than one-third of all crashes involved a motorcycle rider driving under the influence of alcohol.
Motorcyclists in Ohio face the additional challenge of dealing with claims from uninsured drivers. According to the study, Ohio ranks among the states with the highest rates of uninsured motorists. Unfortunately, there have been few changes to the law that would significantly decrease the number of motorcycle accidents in Ohio.
