How Many Deaths Are Caused by Drunk Driving? 

Thousands of people die every year in drunk driving crashes. The statistics on this type of crash are varied from state to state and country to country. Almost half of all fatal car crashes in the United States involve an alcohol-impaired driver. It’s estimated that approximately one million drivers are arrested for DUI each year in the United States. These statistics are based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates. 

The most dangerous age group for drunk driving is young adults. The number of deaths due to drunk driving among young adults has decreased in the last three decades. The CDC reports that about a third of all DUI deaths are repeat offenders. If you drive while impaired with a child under 14 years old, you’ll be charged with a class 6 felony. If you’re convicted of this offense, you’ll be fined up to $150,000 and serve up to 4.5 years in prison. During this time, you’ll also have your license suspended. 

In 2010, the total number of alcohol-impaired fatal crashes in the country was 10,288. In 2013, the total number of fatal alcohol-related crashes was 10,503. During the period from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the total number of traffic accidents caused by an alcohol-impaired driver rose by ten percent. 

In the United States, there were 10,511 deaths from drunk driving in 2018. These deaths occurred in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The NHTSA reported that there were over 1 million drivers who were charged with a DUI in the past year. In 2020, the number of drunk driving deaths will rise by fourteen percent. 

In 2013, 2,344 children died in drunk driving crashes. This represents 17 percent of all traffic-related deaths among children. During this same period, there were over 120,000 emergency rooms where young people were treated for injuries related to alcohol. 

Several factors have contributed to the decline in the number of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities. For example, the rate of drunk driving fatalities for drivers under 21 has decreased by 70 percent. The rate for drivers over 55 has increased. Other factors contributing to the drop in the number of alcohol-impaired-driving deaths include increased use of interlocks and a greater crackdown on drunk driving. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that a total of 10,511 alcohol-related deaths took place in the United States in 2018. The most deadly time for drunk driving is between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which are known as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer”. 

Approximately eight percent of alcohol-related fatal crashes took place in rainy or cloudy conditions. Another eight percent of the crashes were in the nighttime hours. In addition, nearly three percent of drunk driving fatal crashes took place at dusk or dawn.
